Learners of Hendrik Kanise Combined School in Alicedale were over the moon when local hotel, Bushman Sands, part of the River Hotel Group, arrived at the school on Tuesday, 13 August, to treat them on a meal of soup and bread. The GBS Mountain Drive Half Marathon organisers are hoping to make the race as “green” as possible.  While there will be water sachets available at water tables, participants have been asked to bring their own cups or to use hydration packs to avoid the use the plastic sachets where possible.  The hope is that in five years, the race will be plastic free. The water sachets used by participants are usually discarded and even through they are cleared by race organisers, many of them flow into the bushes or end up in drains, adding to the plastic pollution problem.  Marathon…

Organisers have announced a slight change to the finish of this year’s GBS Mutual Bank Mountain Drive Half Marathon. This year, after descending at 19km from Cradock Heights, the route takes runners along Templeton Drive, past Graeme College, left into Withypool Road, into Graeme College and through the school grounds to the finish. Aaron Samuel Mulenga’s Fine Arts Masters solo exhibition, Transcendence through flight, explores the relationship between Christianity and traditional African cultural and belief systems. Kamvelihle Netjies spoke to him after the 10 August opening at the Nun’s Chapel, Rhodes University. A total of 250 learners from the Makhanda (Grahamstown) area gathered to showcase their innovative science and engineering investigations at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists regional science expo. The national franchise describes its outlets as ‘Grocery Factory Shops’ and already operates in three centres. Flying Squad members have arrested two suspects for dealing in Mandrax on the N2 close to Kinkelbos, according to provincial spokesperson for the South African Police Service Colonel Sibongile Soci. “Police members spotted a suspicious silver Nissan Almera driving past them,” Soci said. “The members pulled the vehicle off the road and searched it. In the boot, 50 plastic bags containing 1500 mandrax tablets each were found.” Soci said a total of 77 500 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R5 million were confiscated. Update Missing Person. After an intense two day investigation, the SAPS were alerted by members of the SANDF that the missing person was seen wandering in the veld of the military base.
