A 36-year-old man was arrested after the the Grahamstown Highway Patrol found a bag containing loose dagga in a vehicle they stopped and searched around 4.30pm on Sunday 22 July. The man will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court early this week. During the search of a long-distance bus earlier that day, the team found a blue sports travelling bag containing eight parcels of loose compressed dagga. No one was arrested.

The number of new HIV infections (incidence) significantly declined in 2017 compared to findings of a similar survey conducted in 2012. This decreasing trend is consistent with the previous estimates of HIV incidence. Santam, South Africa’s largest general insurer, recently came to the aid of drought-stricken Makana Municipality, with the donation of 100 eco-roller water drums. The drums can store 75 litres of water and will help community members who need to transport water over long distances on foot. Makana Municipality is at the centre of a severe drought that continues to affect parts of the Eastern Cape. According to reports the municipality has 125 days or less of useable water to go until Day Zero.
