The Legal Resources Centre has red-flagged the Minister of Rural Development for opposing the Prudhoe community’s successful land claim that in April awarded them 26 farms east of Port Alfred, between the Fish and Mpekweni rivers. This comes after the Land Claims Court on Friday 3 August dismissed an application for leave to appeal the order and judgment. The judgment in Mazizini and 2 Others v The Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform and 24 Others was handed down on 11 April 2018 in favour of the Prudhoe community. Detectives from the Stock Theft Unit in Grahamstown recovered 12 goats stolen from a Peddie farm on 27 July in a kraal at nearby Nqwenerhana. A 32 year old man was arrested, police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said. The man faces a charge of stock theft and appeared in the Peddie Magistrate’s court today 3 August. Incidents of stock theft have been a crime of concern within the Grahamstown Cluster and over a period great losses have been suffered by both established and emerging farmers, Govender said. Six suspects aged between 25 and 30 apprehended during a well-coordinated, multi-discipline crime fighting operation appeared in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court today, 3 August 2018, on charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of ammunition. The suspects were arrested on 31 July 2018 around 4pm during a joint operation dubbed Operation Full Moon 2km outside Grahamstown on the N2 towards Peddie, Police spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni said. Eastcape Midlands College suspended academic activities for one day on Monday 30 July on all its campuses, including its Grahamstown (Makhanda) branch, because of protests. This comes as it emerges that hundreds of students have NSFAS funding backlogs from 2017. Spokesperson Elmari van der Merwe confirmed to Grocott’s Mail that while student protests had been confined to the Uitenhage branch, the suspension of academic activities had been campus-wide. The Legal Resources Centre (LRC) has welcomed the Pretoria High Court ruling on Monday 30 July to set aside the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation’s decision to recognise and confer immunity on Dr Grace Mugabe, wife of the former president of Zimbabwe. This followed charges brought against her by one of three young women she assaulted in a hotel room during her visit to South Africa.
