Eastcape Midlands TVET College (EMC) hosted a number of students who obtained their academic qualifications at the Certificate and Diploma Ceremony for the year 2017. The Grahamstown campus, School of Business & Art and Social Sciences Certificates and Diploma ceremony was held on Friday, 31 August 2018 at the Grahamstown Monument. At this ceremony, a total of 121 National Certificate Vocational (NCV) certificates recipients were awarded. On Tuesday, 28 August 2018 British Prime Minister Theresa May landed on South African shores on a state visit. Her visit was rather peculiar. First, unlike other state visits which normally last between two to three days with pomp and ceremony, hers lasted just a day. Or shorter. Gender issues have been highlighted in many ways in education this month. Schools across town participated in the Rhodes silent protest week. VGhs has been the leader in this initiative for many years, and this year more schools participated than ever before. The lecture series was also delivered in two different venues this year with four talks for learners being hosted at Nombulelo thanks to collaboration between the Rhodes community outreach and Jonathan Hellemann the head of Life Orientation of Nombulelo. Schools brought up to 30 learners per talk. On Tuesday 14 August, finalists from the Eskom Expo Regional Finals gathered at the National Settlers Monument to find out if they would be representing the Eastern Cape at the International Science Fair (ISF) on 2-5 October. The finalists were chosen on 4 August at the Regional Finals held at Rhodes University. Of the 254 registered pupils and their 187 projects, 13 went through to represent the Eastern Cape. “It has been difficult to narrow it down to 13 projects,” said Scifest Africa Manager, Pumza Tshebe.
