Ndlambe Municipality has closed the beaches at Port Alfred until further notice following a shark incident this morning. NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said a surfer was bitten on the leg by what appeared to be a juvenile white shark. The Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries’ Working on Fire firefighters in the Eastern Cape continues to be on high alert during this winter fire season. Since the start of the 2019 winter fire season, firefighters in the province were dispatched to suppress more than 20 fires across the province, Eastern Cape Working on Fire said in a media release. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has identified potential fraud cases on 2 800 accounts from different banks and the South African Post Office (SAPO). The vast majority of these cases are from the Eastern Cape. In a media release, the Agency said, “As a precautionary measure, SASSA requested banks and SAPO to stop payment on those accounts. The civil rights organisation AfriForum and the Treasure the Karoo Action Group’s (TKAG’s) succeeded in its appeal against the Ministers of Mineral Resources and Environmental Affairs to aside the regulations on petroleum exploration and production – as promulgated in 2015 and which allows for fracking in South Africa. A full bench judges today ruled in favour of AfriForum and TKAG in the Appeals Court in Bloemfontein. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) working with South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) have arrested people caught with SASSA cards, large sums of cash and the private commercial bank cards of social grant beneficiaries in their possession. According to a media statement from SASSA, a total of 17 people, all of them unregistered moneylenders, were arrested following a joint operation by the Fraud and Compliance Unit in SASSA and the Hawks.
