Rhodes University’s Community Engagement Division launched their new digital storytelling lab, the Social Innovation Hub on Tuesday 25 June evening. The event was attended by the Makana Mayor Mzukisi Mpahlwa, the Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University, Dr Sizwe Mabizela, and social innovators from across Makana who eagerly joined in discussions about potential partnerships and projects that can contribute to solving social ills and building social cohesion, particularly across the Eastern Cape. Two local heroes, Sisa Nomana and Sibusiso Mkhize, music lovers who met after going to the same church together for a number of years, started singing together and formed a big reputation for themselves in a short space of time. For the third time, they will be performing their song “Love Changes Everything” and many more at the National Arts Festival in 2019. Dr Mabokang Monnapula-Mapesela is Rhodes University’s new Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC): Academic and Student Affairs. The first black woman in this position, she succeeds Dr Chrissie Boughey who retired at the end of June following 20 years of service to Rhodes University. Boughey had served as DVC: Academic and Student Affairs since 2014. The South African Police Service is in full gear to police the 2019  National Arts Festival. “There will be sufficient personnel deployed daily on foot and vehicle patrols,” said Eastern Cape Police Provincial head, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga.  “Additional resources will join the deployments. Makhanda karateka Thanduxolo Royi has become only the second South African – and the second Makhanda resident – to have won a medal in a senior kumite category in WUKF World Championship history. The first South African to achieve this honour was Lutho Singata at last year’s Championship held in Dundee, Scotland. Both are members of the United Shotokan-Ryu group of dojos. Makhanda bodybuilder Francois Botha will compete in the Mr Universe International Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (IBFF) Bodybuilding competition in Taranto, Italy on 30 June. Now 20, Botha started his bodybuilding career at the age of 16. The hockey derby between St Andrew’s College and Kingswood College was another competitive affair, with most matches being tightly contested.
