By ZIMKITA LINYANA and LUCAS NOWICKI Loadshedding and the damaged connection between the Howieson’s Poort Dam and the Waainek Water Treatment Works have throttled Makhanda’s water supply in recent weeks, prompting widespread stress and anger amongst residents. Major repairs on the Howieson’s Poort rising main were completed on Wednesday morning, but technicians had to wait for the concrete for the thrust block to dry before testing and pumping. By LUCAS NOWICKI Patricia Mtuse has been a car guard for nearly 25 years and currently works outside Checkers in Makhanda. Mtuse is one of about 50 car guards across the town who are part of the Abakhuseli Skills for Life project, which was officially launched in Makhanda earlier this year. The project trains and assists car guards. Abakhuseli, which means ‘The Protectors’, started in response to the hard lockdown in March 2020, which prevented car guards like Mtuse from working. “I liked being a car guard because it provided for me directly,” said Mtuse. Since 1992, the Assumption Nutrition Centre has taken on responsibility for feeding underprivileged learners and running afterschool classes. The centre was opened after pleas from local teachers and leaders as school learners struggled to concentrate at school due to hunger. The Assumption Sisters began providing breakfast and lunch for the learners and assisted them with their schoolwork after school. Grade 9 Kingswood learner Caca Hobongwana was recently awarded a Gold medal for her Science project “Mind matters: mental health research task” at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists. The project looked specifically at teenagers’ views on mental health issues. Her project was also announced as the best project by a female scientist at the Expo, and she was placed second overall in the sub-regional Expo. On top of this, Caca has also received a one-year bursary to Rhodes University in recognition of her project and efforts.
