Rhodes opened up play by kicking at the start. Immediately Winter Rose gave it all they had, continually trying to carve through the Rhodes defence. 18 May Last weekend saw Kingswood College’s rugby community welcome Port Rex High to Makhanda in an eagerly awaited rugby clash between the two schools. Kingswood is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year and thus will be hosting the annual K-Day event from 11 to 15 June in a few weeks. Saturday 16 February saw SEDRU’s annual Mayoral Cup kick off, with six matches in total taking place in Makhanda (Grahamstown) and Alexandria combined. At the Oval in Makhanda, Old Collegians took on Easterns, and Brumbies clashed with Lily White. Both matches were preceded by games between the teams’ First reserves. The St Andrew’s College Shield took place last weekend at St Andrew’s from January 31 until February 3. The tournament is held annually, consisting of 11 top schools’ water polo teams competing for the Shield from Durban, Cape Town, East London, Port Elizabeth, George and Makhanda (Grahamstown). This made for a larger and more challenging tournament than the previous year’s event, which consisted of only eight teams. On Friday 25 January, Victoria Girls High School held its annual Interhouse Sports Day, comprising of games and athletics on the day. Every year, the Interhouse Sports Day focuses on showcasing the students’ athletic prowess in various events such as 100m, long distance running, discus, javelin, shotput, long and high jump, and soccer. The Isuzu Southern Kings maiden home game of the 2018/2019 Guinness Pro14 saw the home team take on Ulster of Northern Ireland on 16 September 2018. Ulster were coming off two successive wins after two rounds of the season, and were looking at maintaining their record in this fixture. The Kings were poor defensively, with the penalties piling up against Kings throughout the game. The annual, eagerly-awaited K-day derby between St Andrews/ Diocesan School for Girls and Kingswood is taking place this week and especially on Saturday at varied St Andrews, DSG, and Kingswood facilities. The long weekend saw the Rhodes Ultimate Frisbee Society host the Mixed Ultimate Frisbee Nationals 2018 for the first time in the society’s young history. The event was held between 27 and 29 April at Albany Sports Club, with 15 teams from 14 different clubs and societies taking part. There were 10 external clubs and four universities (UCT entered two teams) taking part in the tournament. Ultimate Frisbee is played by transferring the disc from one end of the field to the other, with the person holding the disc not being allowed to move until the disc has been thrown.…
