The National Arts Festival has announced the screening of the Royal Ballet’s performance of the CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS OF LEONARD BERNSTEIN, courtesy of Nebula Productions. The screening will take place in the Olive Schreiner Hall at the Monument on Friday 18 May at 7pm. Three Royal Ballet choreographers honour the creative genius of Leonard Bernstein as part of the special worldwide centennial celebration of works created in response to his music. Last week Tuesday (24 April) the St Andrew’s College Pipe Band, travelled to Amanzimtoti to prepare for the first National Championship Gathering of the season. The College band finished second in the March Selection to KES and second in the March, Strathspey and Reel event to Jeppe in a field of eight school bands. This meant that the trophy for overall winners was presented to the College band.

VulPro, an NGO that works to safeguard Africa’s vulture population through rescue and rehabilitation, has warned that unless urgent action is taken, South Africa’s electrical grid could be driving our endemic Cape Vulture(Gyps coprotheres) towards extinction. This comes after VulPro recorded a total of 23 vultures of mainly the endemic Cape Vulture either having been killed or permanently damaged on power lines in the country during the month of April. More than 200 community and members of various Grahamstown churches, some on horseback and all led by the Eastern Cape SAPS band, joined hands and marched down Raglan Road to the Grahamstown Police Station on Beaufort Street. The peace march was part of the African Enterprise Mission under way in Grahamstown and the purpose was to show appreciation to the members of the SAPS for their ongoing commitment and dedication in serving the community. A 27-year-old passenger on a long-distance bus will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court this week on a charge of possession of dagga. “Monday 20 April at 4.50pm, members of the Grahamstown Highway Patrol Unit stopped and searched a long distance bus at the Monument on the N2 and checked a suitcase in the luggage compartment and found that it contained five large parcels of dagga,” said police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender. The police have praised the good work of Warrant officer Koos Tesnar from Grahamstown Detective Centre after taking what appeared to be a light case very seriously. Nissan, which was crowned King of the Hill for both production and modified saloon cars at the 2017 Simola Hill Climb, has entered three category-defining vehicles for this year’s competition.
