The Bailey Cup is a trophy is contested by Graeme College, Kingswood College, St Andrew’s College, and Port Alfred High School at an annual tournament. From each school, only one pair per age group plays a match against the corresponding age group of each school. At the end of the morning, all the game results are added up to decide the winner. On Saturday, 1 June, there were two first division clashes that saw 6 SAI Army team showing up the Mighty Chiefs by five goals to two while Grahamstown United defeated Golden brothers 7-2. Two Rhodes University scientists, Dr Cliff Jones and Professor Peter Britz, both from the Ichthyology and Fisheries Science department have joined over 70 scientists and industry professionals from 16 countries in Tromsø, Norway to launch the European Union (EU) funded AquaVitae project. AquaVitae is a new research and innovation project funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme. The project consortium consists of 36 partners from 16 different countries, spread across four continents. Five men were arrested on the N2 near Colchester last night after being caught with approximately 14kg of dagga, Police spokesperson Khaya Tonjeni said. The arrests followed suspicions by Kinkelbos police members on patrol on the N2. They noticed a white Opel Kadett traveling towards Port Elizabeth at 11pm. They pulled the vehicle off the road near Colchester and, on searching it, discovered 13 bags of dagga in the boot. The estimated street value is about R 35 000. On Monday morning, 20 May, a local football fraternity was rocked by the sad news of the passing of one of Makhanda’s (Grahamstown’s) best goalkeepers. Mfundo Maku of Eleven Attackers, which is one of the oldest and biggest clubs in Makhanda, passed away last Sunday  after a short illness. Mfundo joined the long list of great keepers who played for Attackers and played a big role in winning the Makana LFA Premier league in 2014 and returned to the Sarah Baartman’s SAB league. Following a special meeting Wednesday 29 May, by the new Eastern Cape Executive Council lead by Premier Lubabalo Mabuyane, much-needed flood relief was signed into effect for two districts, and plans announced for Youth Day and other historical dates.  The special meeting occurred at Settler’s Monument in Makhanda (Grahamstown) and took place immediately after the new MECs took oath of office this morning. The Feral Cat Project of Makhanda (Grahamstown) has returned to its duty in full force, however, they are not out of the woods yet.
