Rhodes University’s Professor Adrienne Edkins has received close to 2 million rand from the UK Government to tackle HIV-related cancer as part of an international initiative to understand and treat HIV related cancer. Cathcart participants painted Daliwe Primary School toilet block; in Aliwal North, The House of Hope was cleaned, repaired and painted and Kwakomani High School in Queenstown fixed a rural school in Lehmansdrift. Lumo and the SPCA got the majority vote on the eve of the national election, as around 100 dogs and 600 owners took to the streets to raise funds for the SPCA. Organiser Benita Tarr said: “The event was a huge success, but only due to help from Grocott’s, participants, sponsors, volunteers and especially the public. We raised up to date R13 670 we hope with the raffle that is running and the remaining t-shirts to sell, we will reach R20 000. We estimated over 600 people attended the walk and over 100 furries. Nombulelo Secondary School had a fantastic week last week.  At the Makhanda chess trials held at Victoria Girls’ High School, of the seven places in the U18 boys’ team, three were taken by Nombulelo learners. Even more impressively, at the Makhanda round of the National choir Eisteddfod, Nombulelo took first position in the Girls’ Massed Choir, the Western and African pieces of the mixed choirs and the mezzo-soprano categories; first and second places in the soprano and baritone categories and second place in the tenors.
