The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) said with the number of applications well past 200 000, they had received 50 000 more applications than at the same time in 2018. However, of the 216 758 applications received since the opening of the 2020 application cycle on 1 September 2019, only 10% of the applicants had chosen TVET colleges as their preferred institution of study. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), working with South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) and the Butterworth police on Friday 18 October arrested five people who allegedly presented fraudulent lists of beneficiaries to a SASSA official. Hailing the arrests as a breakthrough, SASSA said had these attempted transactions not been intercepted, they could have resulted in fraudulent grant withdrawals involving large sums. In a statement, SASSA said, “It has since become clear that the syndicate is operating from Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces, since all fraudulent grant withdrawals are made there.” SASSA said its partnership with law-enforcement agencies, as…

Addo was just short of an all-time record high yesterday, as a large part of the Eastern Cape experienced temperatures in the high 30s up to the mid-40s yesterday. At 45C, Addo was just short of the area’s all-time record of 45.5C. A group of primary school children from Makhanda on a two-day tour to the Addo Elephant National Park were kept indoors at the height of the day’s heat. “It was unbearable outdoors,” one teacher said. In less than three weeks, Makhanda bodybuilder Jeremy Welkom will be packing his bags for Mexico to represent South Africa in the World Championships of the World Fitness Federation. The 25-year-old old body builder and personal trainer, who is a Graeme College alumnus, was selected for Team SA at the National Amateur Body Building Association Championships at Unisa in Pretoria last weekend. A concert on Sunday 20 October at 3pm in the St Andrew’s College Chapel will launch the Makhanda Kwantu Choir’s fundraising campaign to participate in the 2020 World Choir Games in Belgium. Admission is free, but donations are welcome to help raise the funds needed to transport the 25-strong choir to the international event.
