Youth development programme, Student Sponsorship Programme offers five-year high school sponsorships to gifted children from under-resourced homes to attend one of the top 25 schools nationwide. SSP Scholars, Vile Diko and Pelela Mpotulo took home distinctions in isiXhosa and Life Orientation at the Diocesan School for Girls in the recent IEB matric examinations. A young Graeme College 1st XI cricket side has had a very constructive start to the year. Graeme College hosted this year’s Grahamstown Schools’ Cricket Festival, which was uncharacteristically hampered by the very welcome rain. Graeme won comfortably in a T20 fixture against Cambridge on the first day. Viwe Gana (2 for 19) was the pick of the Graeme bowlers, as they restricted Cambridge to 94/ 3 after their 20 overs. Three men aged 22-31 were arrested yesterday, 20 January 2020 in Makhanda, after they were found with an illegal firearm, three sheep carcasses, and sheep skins. South African Police Service spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni said the arrest followed after a case of stock theft was reported by a local farmer. The farmer had found 10 slaughter sites on his farm, leading him to realise 10 sheep had been stolen and slaughtered. The South African Police Service’s Crime Intelligence, the Operational Command Centre and the Port Alfred Dog Unit had co-operated closely, Tonjeni said. No fewer than 996 suspects were arrested over seven days through well organised interventions under Operation Safer Festive Season, Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci reported. Out of the 996 suspects, ten were arrested for rape, 145 assault GBH, 50 burglary, 13 murder, 50 for burglary, 40 assault common and 28 for robberies. “Our approach was directed at hitting hard on the primary generators of crime, namely alcohol and drug abuse,” Soci said. “Seventy two suspects were apprehended for drinking in public while 14 were taken in for illegal dealing in liquor.” A total of 20 300 litres of…
