A 21-year-old man is due to appear in court today on a charge of murder, after police found the body of his elderly relative in her Grahamstown home in the early hours of Saturday. By Nthabiseng Mokone Working on Fire in the Eastern Cape dispatched 50 fire fighters from its Tsomo, Ugie and Joe Gqabi teams to help suppress a fire that started last weekend at Ossa farm in the Lady Grey area. This fire has burnt an estimated 26 000ha since it started, spreading to Barkly East and affecting 15 farms under the Joe Gqabi District municipality and leaving vegetation and crops on seven completely destroyed. Sovereign Food Investments Ltd announced this morning that it has detected avian influenza (AI) at a single layer house on a farm that forms part of the Company’s broader Uitenhage operations. “Approximately 5 000 birds have been culled, which represent approximately 1% of Uitenhage’s production pipeline,” the company said in a media release today. “Sovereign Foods’ management is currently taking the appropriate steps and following the prescribed protocols to prevent AI from spreading to other farms.
