Holy Cross School will have a Country Fair and Fun Run on 3 February at the school on the Highlands Road. Everyone is invited to come and join the Fund grounds development Project. The fun run will start at 8am and the Country Fair will be from 9am to 1pm. On Sunday ANC members gathered at the field in Vukani to elect a new branch committee and select delegates to the ANC’s national elective conference in Gauteng next weekend. The guest speaker was Skara Njadayi, General Secretary of the ANC’s Sarah Baartman region. Njadayi encouraged the members to participate in the community by assisting where ever help is needed. For example, if there is someone who deserves to have an ID or maintenance grant and can’t, the leaders must assist. Zimkhulu Madwarha has had a veggie garden for the last six years.He grows spinach, pumpkin, potatoes and onions, which he sells to the community to supplement his wages, which he says are not much. Madwarha also gives some of his crop to close and extended family members. He told Grocott’s Mail that he would be a lot happier if he had seed and a hosepipe to water his garden. 54 Children from Holy Cross School performed their Christmas play in St George’s Hall recently. As is the school’s tradition, the play was written by storyteller Basil Mills and translated by the school’s staff. The play is about how fire come to earth and the story goes that it was forever winter on earth, the animals were very cold and the sun stayed away. Colin Cirha, who lives in Vukani, is very proud of garden. Cirha has a fence and a hedge around his property. Inside, he grows spinach, mielies, onions, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, garlic and beetroot. Cirha planted his garden the day he arrived in Vukani. He had to, he says, because he was unemployed. From his garden produce, he gets a little bit of money for bread and other essentials for the dinner table. Another motivation for the keeping a garden was that sick people need to eat vegetables. Guests and club members joined Winter Rose Rugby club as celebrated its 130th anniversary during a gala dinner at City Hall last Saturday evening.  Former legends included the Programme Director, Ramie Xonxa and speakers included Mayor Nomhle Gaga . Sunday School teacher and Full Gospel Church member Martin Rushton decided to make his garden on church property. Congregation members donated pot plants and a bath basin, which Rushton, with some help from Gardner Samson, dug into the soil and filled with plant. Rushton planted over sixty succulent plants over a period of about 10 months in the first phase.  The second phase will be another five-meter long garden with at least 100 succulents, and a fireplace against the wall. Winter Rose Rugby Football Club will hold its 130th anniversary celebrations this weekend. The celebrations take place on Saturday 18 November in the City Hall, starting at 5pm. The club was established in 1887 and, according to committee member Ramie Xonxa, the club has invited various sports clubs throughout Grahamstown and Eastern Cape. Various schools have also been invited to the event.  Preparing for the event are club committee members, from left to right, Sindile Ntlokwana, Thembisa Jela, Nombulelo Pona and Ramie Xonxa.
