By Mathews Nthinya Thirty-three years after matriculating from St Andrews College and Diocesan School for Girls (DSG), Sazi Matama and Judith Middleton handed over 64 matric dance dresses to Nathaniel Nyaluza Secondary School grade 12 learners for their matric dance. Matama began the initiative during his sanitary pad drive for school, which helped female learners stay in school by providing them with sanitary pads. During his visit, he noticed the need for matric dance dresses at Nathaniel Nyaluza Secondary School and decided to take action. Realising that he couldn’t do it alone, he reached out to Middleton, who also matriculated…
By Sonia A. Rao and Nombulelo Damba-Hendrik, GroundUp Many learners in the Eastern Cape are going hungry at school in spite of the National School Nutrition Programme. The Eastern Cape Department of Education says all schools are getting the budgeted amount, which is from R3.05 per meal per learner in a primary school. But some schools report that they are getting less per child, often because there are learners in the class without birth certificates, who are not counted in the allocation. By Ross Marriner I have often been asked the question – “When is the best time to start investing?” The answer is – from the day you started earning an income. The next best time to start investing is right now. The sooner you start investing in growth assets such as unit trusts, pension or provident funds, offshore investments, bank savings accounts or retirement annuities, the more likely it will be that you will enjoy a comfortable retirement. Trying to “time the market” is a futile exercise as nobody has ever done this successfully and consistently over multiple business or…
By Mathews Nthinya As a gesture of goodwill, Avril Turpin, the great-granddaughter of the late Reverend William Homan Turpin, Fikizolo Primary School founder, recently donated gutters to the school. This benevolent act comes after years of the school grappling with old, corroded gutters that had long lost their functionality due to rust and wear. Turpin firmly believes that her investment in the school’s gutters is wise, ensuring their longevity for years to come. She thinks this strategic move has secured a reliable running water supply for Fikizolo School for decades to come. “Our gutters were in very poor condition,” says…
Dear Readers, As the Advisory Board for Grocott’s Mail, we are writing to express our deep concern and condemnation of the recent attacks on one of our dedicated journalists, Anna Majavu, on 19 September 2023. While covering a sensitive story at the Makhanda Magistrate Court, Majavu faced threats, harassment, and even physical violence. These actions directly threaten Majavu’s well-being and undermine the very essence of democracy and values that we hold dear. Grocott’s Mail has always been committed to upholding the principles of press freedom, journalistic integrity, and the significance of free and independent media in a democratic society. We…
