On behalf of Somerset Place Retirement Village, I would like to thank everyone who supported our Sing-Song evening on 9 March. An amount of R4 500 was raised, for which we are very grateful. Most of the money will be spent for a sitting-out-area and gazebo for the residents in the flats. The South African Police Service has asked anyone who thinks their male relative may have been travelling in a bakkie that crashed on the Kei Cuttings late yesterday afternoon to contact the Kei Bridge Police. Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the accident between Kei Bridge and Butterworth left two men fatally injured. One of the men has not yet been identified. The other deceased, who is 21, has been identified and his name is being withheld until his next of kin have been told. Both were travelling in a bakkie. The Department of Labour will embark on another series of roadshows around the National Minimum Wage, this time focusing on the Bill Exemption process with employers across the country. The bill to pave way for the NMW, has been published for public representations. The briefing sessions will commence in Johannesburg on 19 March before moving to Pretoria and then across the country. In an official statement Rhodes University expresssed deep shock and sadness about the death yesterday of Professor Matthew Lester after a short illness. A qualified chartered accountant, Lester had worked at South African Revenue Services (SARS), BDO, Department of Accounting, Rhodes University and at the Rhodes Business School where he specialised in the fields of stewardship, governance, taxation and entrepreneurial law. The Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) has introduced a 24-hour WhatsApp line (076 403 6223) to report irresponsible trading. This includes selling to underage people, trading beyond regulated trading hours, selling to visibly intoxicated people, selling to pregnant women, playing loud music, lack of proper security on the premises and blocking of driveways by the patrons.
