Nedbank has committed R25 million towards safeguarding critical water source areas, biodiversity hotspots and rural livelihoods with a strong focus on the Eastern Cape. The money will be spent in partnership with WWF South Africa which has a long working relationship with Nedbank. “For the past eight years, Nedbank and WWF have partnered to support sustainable farming across South Africa. The Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) is calling for applications from Youth Owned Enterprises (YoEs) and youth entrepreneurs across the province as it sets the fund rollout programme in motion. Power and control by perpetrators often leads to domestic violence and eventually their incarceration. The vicious cycle not only leads to assaults and sexual abuse but sadly the loss of life. Victims of abuse include close family members and children who become instant orphans. In an attempt to break this cycle, the South African Police Service partnered with the Department of Correctional Services and conducted an education campaign for inmates on Friday 30 August. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) stopped 6 000 payments in the August payment cycle. In a statement, the Agency said this was part of a joint operation with the SA Post Office to combat grant fraud. This week we reached a milestone at the SPCA when we bid a very fond farewell to the 100th animal adopted from our centre since January this year. Those 100 adopted animals include more than 40 cats and kittens and 50 dogs and puppies. This is a record for our SPCA. The number of adoptions processed in January 2019 alone exceeded the number of adoptions done throughout 2018. Working on Fire in the Eastern Cape recently recruited more than 50 young people who will be trained as veld and forest firefighters different bases around the province. Ground Operations Manager of the province Nkululeko Mlanjeni said these young men and women were recruited in Lottering, Witelsbos, Longmore, Mkhambathi, Langeni, Mhlahlane and Ugie this week. In extremely cold conditions the school fixture between Graeme College and Port Rex started with two hockey matches on Friday 19 July. The Graeme u15A side managed a 4-0 win but the 1st XI struggled to find any rhythm in the cold conditions. They managed to score early, but didn’t look convincing for most of the game and the score ended as a 1-0 win for Graeme. The rugby sides had even worse conditions to deal with on Saturday morning.
