On Saturday Sophia Stars came from a goal down to overcome the youthful Young Eagles side by three goals to one. It was a difficult game for both teams, as it was played in very hot weather. But what happens when R175 000, raised by a community trust for new books, disappears?  In 2005, the Makana Friends of the Library Committee with then-head librarian Meg Hartzenberg, created the Old Book Fund after antique book dealers sold several valuable books from the Hill Street library in Makhanda (Grahamstown).  Dating from around the opening of the Hill Street Library in the 1840s, the valuable books included several travel stories, old geographical guides, “Yellow books” which are bound magazines and some popular Victorian-era fiction of the time. …

By GEMMA RITCHIE Sarah Baartman’s libraries and school children shone recently at the provincial debating and spelling bee competition in Mount Frere. Seven districts competed to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the National Book Week following a district-level competition held earlier in Ndlambe.  Of around 80 school children in the Alexandria round, only 13 travelled to Mount Frere to compete.  “The standard was very high,” Assistant Director for Sarah Baartman Libraries Unathi Nciweni  said. “Our kids did well.” The children who placed third received a Kindle, those in second place were awarded a tablet, and the winners received a laptop. First up was the local derby with Makana Pillars locking horns with City Pirates in a closely contested game. Both teams seemed very tired towards the end of the game.
