Artists who would like to partake in the Fringe programme during the 2010 National Arts Festival, which will run from 20 June to 4 July in Grahamstown this year, are being granted one final extension to ensure that their application forms are submitted by 25 January.

Benjamin Mahlasela Secondary School achieved a 100% pass rate in the recent matric exams, which principal Sandile Dude attributes to having a small matric class. According to Dude, having a class of seven matric learners meant that teachers could provide more individual attention to the learners.
Hendriks Kanise Combined School in Alicedale has proved to be a success despite the challenging circumstances — unemployment and lack of facilities — that face the local community.
The wet weather did not dampen the spirits of learners as they rushed to school for their first day this year.
“I don’t know why the teachers didn’t give us stationery lists last year because now we have spent all our money on food, clothes and other unnecessary things,” says local high school pupil Coceka Menzi.}
Excited, scared, worried and nervous were some of the words used by learners, teachers and parents to describe how they felt on Wednesday as schools in South Africa re-opened for the new year. Learners and staff at PJ Olivier geared up for the first day of school as they were shown into their new classrooms and introduced to staff members.
"We all know kids grow out of clothes quickly, especially boys,” says Grade 9 parent Ntombomzi Fatyi. Fatyi recently had to stock up on school uniforms for her son who attends St Andrew’s College. “I buy new uniforms almost every year for my son and there is no way of escaping that, they grow by nature,” she added.
