The wet weather did not dampen the spirits of learners as they rushed to school for their first day this year.

Some will be part of ‘big school’ for the very first time while others continue their academic adventure. Fear of the unknown has taken centre stage for those who are going to school for the very first time, while other learners were excited to meet up with their friends from the holidays.

Anele Ndyolashe, principal of NV Cewu Primary School, said he is excited about the year ahead and that the turnout on Wednesday was 100%. He said the school has two things to celebrate this year: being changed to a Quantile 3 school (no fees) and the launch of their Grade 4 class.

“We had a gap from Grade 3 and 5, now we have closed that gap,” Ndyolashe said. Ndyolashe said the main challenge facing the school this year is a lack of facilities for younger learners. “With the increase in learners this year, we might need more teachers and classrooms.

We don’t have facilities for Grade R because the Education Department has decided to incorporate a pre-school with the main school.”

Principal of Makana Primary School, Mkhosi Williams said, “We had 80% turnout today which is quite good. Some students enrolled last year while the others are still in the process of being  registered.”

The school has also been graded as a Quantile 3 school. Principal of Khutliso Daniels Secondary School, Radio Mcuba did not want to talk to Grocott’s Mail as he was “addressing learners”.
