"We all know kids grow out of clothes quickly, especially boys,” says Grade 9 parent Ntombomzi Fatyi. Fatyi recently had to stock up on school uniforms for her son who attends St Andrew’s College.

“I buy new uniforms almost every year for my son and there is no way of escaping that, they grow by nature,” she added.

For many learners’ parents, going back to school means digging a little deeper into their pockets to fund the necessary requirements. This is often challenging for parents after the festive season.

Many local store managers said they have retained the same prices as last year whilst others have noticed a slight increase in the price of stationery.

Woolworths branch manager, Elmarie Vos said, “I’ve learned from experience that people buy school wear before Christmas when they get their bonuses."

Verna Kilby is a parent who buys her children’s school uniforms in December and she said, “I buy everything I need to buy for school, because it is a priority.

Then I spend the rest on festive entertainments. I like budgeting on time because if you don’t that comes back to you.”
