Last Saturday, Grahamstown celebrated the scariest day of the year with a Halloween Fair hosted by Makana Tourism at Church Square.
Stall holders sold an array of goodies from handmade clothing to ‘insect-infested’ party packs for the kids. Members of the community came out in full force and embraced the day, dressing up in costumes and parading as zombies, witches, fairies and aliens.
The square was a playground for the kids, who role-played zombie attacks on unsuspecting victims – much to the amusement of those attending.
Sue Waugh, Director of Makana Tourism, said she was pleased to see how excited the community was, despite the bad weather conditions on the day.
She added that plans are in place for a Christmas Fair later in the year. In the evening, Brian Jackson, local community stalwart and DA councillor, led a group of inquisitive minds into the night on a ghost walk – something organisers are hoping will become an annual event.
The group met at Makana Tourism offices and were led off around the streets, hearing stories of the city's most famous ghosts and the buildings they're believed to inhabit along the way.
