Port Alfred police are investigating the cause of a fire that gutted a motor vehicle spares shop on Sunday night.

Port Alfred police are investigating the cause of a fire that gutted a motor vehicle spares shop on Sunday night.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said officers from a local security company were patrolling in Bathurst Street in Port Alfred when they noticed the building had caught fire.

She said emergency services and police responded to the incident within minutes and tried in vain to contain the blaze.

"They managed to prevent it from spreading; however, the entire premises where the fire started was totally gutted together with its valuable contents," she said.

Experts were expected to visit the shop to collect forensic evidence which will help determine the cause of the fire, according to Govender.

Port Alfred Police Station Commander Colonel Lizette Zeelie who was at the scene on Monday, said, "At this stage we are treating this as an accident. This status could change depending on our forensic investigation."

Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact the Port Alfred Police at 046 604 2030.
