Swallows and Grahamstown Brumbies rugby clubs hosted friendly rugby fixtures at the Oval on Saturday 8 February.

With the late arrival of Brumbies' opponents, Swallows took the afternoon gap to play their friendly against Trying Stars from Alexandria.

Brumbies then took to the field after 5pm for their main match. In the Swallows game, a stray pass from Swallows immediately after kick-off saw Trying Stars snatch the ball and score the few points of the match. Swallows were able to snatch the lead after a few successful penalty kicks by captain Rodney Goba.

However, late in the second half saw Trying Stars regain the lead and finally take a 17-9 win. Brumbies, however, scored eight tries in their 48-21 win over Kirkwood in front of a large supportive crowd. Brumbies lead 29-14 at half-time.

Brumbies opened the scoring in the 7th minute with lock forward Allan Loutz diving over for a try, Vincent Mains converted. Kirkwood scored to level matters minutes later.

This try seemed to spark the Brumbies players into action as Denvon Goliath, Angelo Frazer, Jerome Blaauw and Sheldon Nelson scored tries in the first half.

The second half saw further tries from Nelson, Duane Brown, Mains and Alexius Steyn as Brumbies ran out 48-21 winners.
