This is the latest news from a Council meeting currently in progress, where Mayor Zamuxolo Peter confirmed there were serious cash-flow problems.
Scheduled to start at 10am today, the meeting was adjourned to midday after Peter and Municipal Manager Pravine Naidoo had to address disgruntled municipal workers.
Angry workers had gathered in front of the city hall on Friday 25 October after their salaries had not been paid, as rumours rapidly spread that the municipality had no money in the bank.
Since then, employees' fortunes have been mixed, with some being paid, some receiving part of their salaries and some not getting paid at all.
SA Municipal Workers Union secretary Lindelwa Faltein told Grocott's Mail this morning that some workers had been paid on Saturday.
"They called this meeting today with the leadership to discuss the issue of the salaries that were paid late," said Faltein.
The meeting with the workers at the city hall ended around midday.
The Council meeting followed. There, Mayor Peter said acting municipal manager Thembinkosi Myalato and acting chief financial officer Marius Crouse had told him on Friday that they had managed to extract payment from some creditors. This had made it possible to pay some staff, the Mayor said.
On Friday the Mayor promised that while directors and managers might have to wait for their salaries, other Makana employees would be paid.
Although DA councillors wanted this morning's Council meeting to go ahead, with the house electing an acting mayor and an acting municipal manager, the vote was taken for the meeting to adjourn to midday.
