A Makana Council meeting scheduled to start at 10am on Monday 28 October was adjourned because Mayor Zamuxolo Peter and Municipal Manager Pravine Naidoo were busy addressing disgruntled municipal workers.
This followed rumours circulating since Friday that the municipality had no money in the bank. Workers gathered in front of the city hall on Friday 25 October because their salaries had not been paid.
Although DA councillors wanted today's Council meeting to go ahead, with the house electing an acting mayor and an acting municipal manager, the vote was taken for the meeting to adjourn until midday on Monday.
Speaker Rachel Madinda-Isaac told councillors the Mayor would report back to them on what had been discussed during the meeting with the workers.
Meanwhile, employees fortunes have been mixed, with some being paid, some receiving half their salaries and some not getting paid at all.
SA Municipal Workers Union secretary Lindelwa Faltein told Grocott's Mail on Wednesday morning that some workers had been paid on Saturday 26 October.
"They called this meeting today with the leadership to discuss the issue of the salaries that were paid late," said Faltein. The meeting with the workers is still in progress at the city hall.
