Grahamstown police confiscated a bag containing nearly 5000 mandrax tablets with a street value of R300 000 at a vehicle checkpoint near the Fort Brown Police Station on Wednesday 7 August.

Members of the Fort Brown SAPS within the Grahamstown Cluster and members of the provincial traffic department were conducting a vehicle check point on the R67 near the Fort Brown Police Station when they stopped a white Jetta with two men aged 43 and 28 and a 25-year-old woman.

On searching the vehicle, they found a medium sized black travelling bag in the boot of the car in which the mandrax was being hidden. The bag also contained about R15 000 cash.

"The suspects were travelling from Keiskammahoek to Port Elizabeth," said SAPS spokesperson Captain Mali Govender in a statement. "The destination of the parcel is yet to be determined."

All three people were arrested and detained. They face charges of drug possession and will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrates Court on Monday 12 August.

Cluster Commander of Grahamstown Brigadier Vakala Moyake commended the young members for their vigilance and professionalism and members of the Provincial Traffic for their ongoing support in the fight against crime.

He said that this is one of the largest recorded seizures of Mandrax for the Grahamstown Cluster.
