The municipality says a faulty pump at the Howieson's Poort pump station has caused Grahamstown's most recent water outages.

A statement from Rhodes University's Infrastructure and Operations division quotes an update from Makana Municipality that says technicians will be flown from Johannesburg tomorrow (Friday) to repair the pump.

The statement was posted on the Rhodes SRC's Facebook page today.

Forwarded from the division's Deputy Director: Administration, Finance & Procurement, Waldette Lombard, the statement says, "Please be advised that there is going to be a delay in the pump alignment operation at [Howieson' Poort] pump station which was scheduled for today due to Amatola Water's last minute change of mind in [carrying]out this operation as previously committed."

"The company that did the repairs will fly someone from Johannesburg tomorrow morning to carry out this operation."

The statement says the municipality expects pumping to resume tomorrow (Friday) afternoon.

"Water will, however, not be immediately available due to the time it will take to fill the reservoirs."

Low-lying areas will be first to have their service restored and the water supply to high-lying areas is expected to return during the weekend.
