In the last few weeks we have received nominations for the Grocott’s Mail Newsmaker of the Year for 2012. The award is exactly what the name says – it is for someone, or something that made the news – or more specifically the news in the Makana municipal area.
In the last few weeks we have received nominations for the Grocott’s Mail Newsmaker of the Year for 2012. The award is exactly what the name says – it is for someone, or something that made the news – or more specifically the news in the Makana municipal area. The criterion here is quite simply newsworthiness no other values count.
Quite a few people have called in or written to us nominating a noble soul – someone who has done good for our community. The problem here is that there are many people who do good in Makana and some of them are real modern day saints but they carry out their work selflessly and quietly out of the limelight.
We can think of several people who work hard trying to help the down trodden and the neglected in our area. These are remarkable human beings and certainly deserve to be acknowledged, but you will often find that those who are worthy of the accolades are not really interested in publicity. They will do it anyway.
These great people will probably not be chosen as the newsmaker of the year simply because they have not been in the news.
On Monday morning, the newsroom staff of Grocott’s Mail will gather around the table where we usually have our diary meetings and discuss who should be the 2012 newsmaker of the year.
It could be a virtuous person, a controversial institution or someone who is notorious for their evil deeds.

It might seem that the world has come to an end without your Grocott’s Mail for a few weeks, but don’t worry, it will recommence on 8 January when we publish our first edition of the new year.
