The army is more than just guns and war was the lesson Grade 9 pupils from Hoerskool PJ Olivier learned when they visited 6 South African Infantry Battalion at the Grahamstown Military Base recently.
The pupils were introduced to skills such as how to navigate using a compass and how to work together as a team.

There was emphasis in the presentations on how disciplined soldiers conduct themselves and the fact that being a soldier was not only about weapons and conflict. They were told about the different departments, such as the South African Military Health Services and the South African Engineer Corps.

Pupils Siviano Korkee and Keith Trompetter said it had been a great opportunity, because they'd learned a lot about things that they didn't think the Army had.

They said that after passing Grade 12, they planned to join the army. One of the teachers, Johan Gerber, was also positive about the experience, saying while he'd visited before, this time he'd experienced a lot more.
Co-ordinator of the career day, Captain Carl Fuller, said because the army was based in Grahamstown, they also formed part of the community.

"That is why, when the community needs us, we try by all means to support them," Fuller said.
He said those interested in joining the Military were encouraged to fetch a recruitment form from the nearest Army office.
