Two men were sentenced to 15 years each this week, in the Grahamstown Regional Court, for murdering a soldier outside an Extension 6 tavern.

Xolisa “West” Lubhelwana, 22, and his co-accused, Bathandwa Plaatjie, 19, stabbed Morenyane Phokontsi several times with knives at KwaTshonyane Tavern in Extension 6 on August 29 last year.

Last month state prosecutor Zwelethu Mata described the attack on Phokontsi as brutal, barbaric, vicious, and callous while he presented his final arguments, and asked the court to sentence the accused to a long period in prison.

On Monday magistrate Onica van Pappendorf sentenced the men to 15 years imprisonment each for Phokontsi's murder.
