A Makana karate squad brought home 12 medals from the South African Shotokan Karate Nationals in the Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre recently, hosted by the South African Shotokan Karate Academy. The squad comprised nine members of the Joza Karate Club and five from the Makana Karate Club.

Medals were as follows:

* Mzwandile Matebese won two silver medals in kumite (fighting);

* Bonani Kutsi, Qhamani Manetsa, Sifiso May, Lihle Libi, Lufefe Sityi, Lomwabo Sandi and Thandolwethu Mcoboki each won silver medals in kumite;

* Simphiwe Dlephu and Imivuyo Ranuga both won gold medals in kumite;

* Mahle Singata won a bronze medal in kumite.

Mzwandile Matebese, head instructor at Makana Karate Club said: "we did very well and I am proud of this team we prepared very well thanks to all the Makana clubs who represented".

Matebese also stated that the karate will be in action at Rhodes University on 29 October where they will take part in a event organized by East Cape Shotokan-Ryu and will also act as the Rhodes Shokotan Karate Championships. The event will be held in the Hanger, behind the Rhodes journalism building. Medals will be awarded to the top three in each category, while the senior men will also compete for the Roger Adams Floating Trophy in the rotational team kumite category.
