Mary Waters 1st rugby side beat their PJ opponents 26-14 in an inter-schools rugby match played at Rhodes Great Field on Wednesday.

The Great Field is currently used as the Mary Waters home ground, due to protracted renovations at The Oval sports field opposite Mary Waters. The match started with wave after wave of attacks from PJ, as they attempted to dominate and put pressure on the home side.

However, the Mawas side stood their ground and began to play their brand of running rugby. From a lineout awarded to PJ, Alvino Kennedy won the ball for Mary Waters and passed to Jaco Buys, who went on to score in the corner.

Janain Walters converted to give Mary Waters a 7-0 lead. Mary Waters continued to put pressure on the PJ side and swift handling of the ball saw winger Alecenio du Plessis score an unconverted try. PJ were then awarded a penalty try, which was converted by Grathan Windvogel.

The half-time score was 12-7 in favour of Mary Waters. The second half saw du Plessis score his second try for Mary Waters, as Walters converted to give their side a 19-7 lead. Both teams upped their game and after consistent pressure on PJ, Sheldon Denson scored and Walters once again converted, taking Mary Waters to a 26-7 lead.

With time running out, replacement flanker Chand Butler scored for PJ. Windvogel converted as the whistle ended the game and Mary Waters won 26-14. In an earlier game, Mary Waters U15 beat the PJ side 32-10.
