Eight local basketball players are currently taking part in the national basketball trials as part of the Eastern Cape team. The Grahamstonians in the side consist of six men and two women. The men are: Tisco Mati, Sizwe Magikwa, Thembani Adam, Sonwabiwe Lwana, Luzuko Mothlapane and Walter Kayai, while the two women are Sipho Nkabini and Nompelo Stuurman.
As the 16 days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children came to an end on Thursday, the local Department of Social Welfare planned to end the campaign on a high note.
The Grahamstown Military Sports Club (GMSC) held its annual sports awards dinner last week. Sportsmen and sportswomen in the sixteen sporting codes were awarded for their various achievements. Rose Rankoko and Rawdon Bell were named the GMSC Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year.
The local project manager for Grahamstown’s 2010 programme, Jeff Budaza, spoke on the various 2010 projects which are already happening as well as those that are in the pipeline. Budaza, who is also the sport and recreation officer at Makana Municipality, was speaking at the Grahamstown Military Sports Club’s awards dinner recently.
“I thank God for giving me a disabled child as this enabled me to take care of other disabled children,” said Liziwe Gqotola at the Makana/Capitec civic awards ceremony at Noluthando Hall on Saturday. She was the overall winner of the awards which according to Makana Mayor Vumile Lwana “are there torecognise unsung heroes and heroines”.
Rhodes University hosted the University Sports South Africa Tennis Tournament last week. The tournament saw 44 men and women university teams from across the country taking part in the event, which started on Monday 7 December and ended with the final matches on Friday 11 December.
Over 70 players and supporters will be part of the Hoërskool PJ Olivier touring group to Namibia from 4 June to 14 June next year. Rugby coach Lyndon Brandt has been working hard with the pupils and has giving them a training programme to keep them fit during the holiday break.
The usually drab Noluthando Hall in Joza received a quick make-over for the Makana/Capitec Civic Awards on Saturday evening.
The 6SAI Battalion held its medal parade on Wednesday, where over 400 awards were made. The parade was also the inauguration of the proficiency badge of Air Assault which was designed by 6SAI member Major Werner Klokow.
