The Grahamstown Military Sports Club (GMSC) held its annual sports awards dinner last week.

Sportsmen and sportswomen in the sixteen sporting codes were awarded for their various achievements. Rose Rankoko and Rawdon Bell were named the GMSC Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year.

Major Altin Gysman, GMSC sports officer said the awards evening was to give recognition to sports performers.

Konane is a member of the GMSC netball club and was also named the Best Netball Player. Bell, a member of the squash club, finished ninth at the SANDF squash champs in Bloemfontein and was part of the 35-39 age category of the SANDF team.

Mazwi Makana of the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and Jeff Budaza, Makana sports and recreation officer and project manager for 2010 programmes were the guest speakers for the evening.

In his speech, Makana said sport cuts across the colour line and is for all cultures. He urged the youth to “rise up and show potential,” and said his department have officials looking out for talented players and there are a number of activities run through the year for the youth. He also stated that the department works closely with various rugby and soccer clubs to organise a number of events. He was pleased to state that the military base was part of one of the events organised, and “they performed well”.

“Let’s all rise up, see how best we can do within the work place, and look forward to 2010,” said Makana before concluding: “Let’s play the game, but play it safe.”

The sporting codes which were awarded were for jukskei, combat rifle, angling, boxing, walking, volleyball, darts, netball, tennis, cricket, rugby, golf, squash, pool, soccer and for the first time, parachuting was also on the awards list, with the officer commanding of 6SAI Leutendant Colonel Martin Gopane receiving a parachuting award.
