As the 16 days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children came to an end on Thursday, the local Department of Social Welfare planned to end the campaign on a high note.

As the 16 days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children came to an end on Thursday, the local Department of Social Welfare planned to end the campaign on a high note.

The department got together with the local SAPS to hold a silent march to the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court to hand over a petition, pleading for no bail for people who abuse women and children. However due to poor attendance the organisers opted for an awareness campaign where they went to different areas enlightening people of their right to a better living and informing them about where they may seek help if they are being abused.

“I wish people could attend events like this one as they do when there’s something beneficial them like social grants, because even though they might not get any material gifts they get knowledge and knowledge is power,” said Nomvuyo Peter, acting Victim Empowerment Programme Coordinator at the department.

She added: "The perpetrators are really destroying the tomorrow of our future leaders and without them the future will not be as strong. People should come even if they think they’re not abused as they might help others.”
