We read in 1 Corinthians 1; 26 Consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus,…

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration, which produced the first ever image of a black hole, has revealed this week a new view of the massive object at the centre of the M87 galaxy: how it looks in polarised light. EHT collaboration members Dr Iniyan Natarajan and Prof Roger Deane, both with roots in Rhodes University, were involved in this discovery. This is the first time astronomers have been able to measure polarisation, a signature of magnetic fields, and this close to the edge of a black hole. The observations are key to explaining how the M87 galaxy, located 55…

The Grahamstown Feeding Association (GFA) was started in 1999, to feed those, primarily adults, who fall between the cracks of various government-sponsored and NGO feeding schemes. With a small but dedicated core staff, the GFA provides roughly 3000 meals per month at our kitchen in Knight Street in Grahamstown / Makhanda. Meals consist of a large mug of soup with 3-4 slices of fresh bread, Mondays to Fridays, 09h30–12h00. When funds permit the soup is supplemented with soya mince and vegetables and the bread with peanut butter.  It costs R8 to provide 1 meal, taking into account the cost of…

By ROGER ROWSWELL The rainfall for February at Darling Street was a meagre 37.3mm over 9 raindays. The long term average (LTA) over 36 years for February is 72.1mm and LT Median at 57.7mm. .  Looking at the graph below, comparing Darling Street monthly rainfall 2021 with that of the Old Gaol in 1922 99 years ago, the year Grahamstown had its last big deluge and flooding, it can be seen that although different, they are following a similar trend – although it is still very early in 2021 to draw conclusions. It must be stated that the long term…

Jesus, in teaching His disciples, warned against the illusions of life. Throughout (Luke 12) Christ warned against being misled by appearances. In (Lk.12:4-12) Jesus warned against the illusion of fearing man above God: “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear. Fear Him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you fear Him.”             In (Lk.12:13-21) Jesus warned against the illusion that…

Reverend Dr Simon Gqubule was honoured by Kingswood College recently, by having the school’s main access road, named after him. The late academic and community leader’s family attended the ceremony on Sunday 14 March, and his daughter, Baba Gqubule, cut the ribbon to formally open Reverend Dr Simon Gqubule Avenue.   The ceremony took place after the school’s Foundation Day Chapel Service, presided over by Bishop Freemantle and was attended by the congregation.  Explaining the significance of renaming Burton Street, Chairperson of the Kingswood College Council Warrick Strachan said it was not an attempt to erase the past, but “continuing our journey, into…

Jesus found it necessary to pray. Often He would withdraw from the crowds to a quiet place to spend time in prayer. Luke 5:16 – “Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” At the height of his ministry, on the eve of his atoning death on the cross, “being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground”. (Luke 22:44). Do we not much more…
