By Ross Marriner Inflation is like a thief in the night. It sneaks up on you, gradually eroding the purchasing power of your money. Gerald Ford, former president of the United States, referred to inflation as “public enemy number one!” It is essential to guard against inflation when developing your financial plan. Inflation represents how much more expensive a relevant set of goods and/or services have become over a certain period, usually over a year. The official inflation rate in South Africa, as reported by Stats SA, is currently 6.8%. This rate changes on a monthly basis and is influenced…
By Sibahle Ngemntu and Asiphesona Wonqwelo A fire broke out on 15 June at around 3pm at 26 L Street, Tantyi, leaving a family of five homeless and with nothing left to get them through the winter. According to the residents of the house, the fire started because rain leaked through the roof of the house onto a faulty and exposed plug. However, a statement from the Fire Department says the cause of the fire has not been determined. The family could not save anything from the fire, and they blame the Makhanda water crisis. They told Grocott’s Mail that…
By Lelethu Zono and Ntombentsha Yamiso With almost every street in Makhanda riddled with potholes for drivers and other road users, every turn adds to the fury. Moreover, the poor Makhanda roads have made driving a very costly and potentially dangerous experience for road users. According to the local Uncedo Taxi Association Marshall, Sandie Netyisi, Makana municipality had agreed and committed to short and long-term plans to fix the roads. “The short-term plan was to temporarily fill the potholes since there weren’t enough funds to fix the road, and the long-term plan was to dig up and pave the streets…
This Council, Noting the latest water crisis that has afflicted the Makana Municipality, that has left residents in certain areas without water for extended periods of time, which has led to protests and violence against the truck drivers delivering water to the afflicted areas, as well as the dysfunctional unit at Alicedale and the ongoing issue of overtime, further notes: That Councillors, Ward Councillors, in particular, were left to face the ire of the residents with no apparent support from the Executive. That despite imploring from Councillors over an extended period, no water joint operations committee (JOC) which could assist…
By Luvuyo Sizani, DA Councillor, and DA Makana Caucus Leader On 20 June, the Democratic Alliance (DA) tabled a motion of no confidence against the Executive Mayor of Makana, Yandiswa Vara. The motion was submitted to the Records section on the 24th of May 2023 and formed part of the Special Council meeting that took place on 20 June in the Council Chamber. Throughout the water crisis which is crippling our city and our municipality, the Executive Mayor has been silent and has not demonstrated the leadership required of a person in her position. At no stage did she…
By Steven Lang The oldest treasures on display during the National Arts Festival are about 360 million years old – more than 100 million years older than the first dinosaurs. The Albany Museum invites visitors to Makhanda to learn about South Africa’s Devonian fossil heritage at the Devonian Ecosystem Project – free of charge. The gallery is housed in a building separate from the main museum, near Victoria Primary School. The Project studies fossil treasures that cannot be found anywhere else on earth. These include lampreys, tetrapods, coelacanths, scorpions, various plants and extinct fishes. All these fossils were found in…
By the Makana Citizens’ Front (MCF) and Unemployed Peoples’ Movement (UPM) We are the poor and the unemployed of Makhanda. No one will speak or stand for us. We speak and act for ourselves. We are a people with conscious and autonomous political agency. We are the Unemployed People’s Movement and the Makana Citizens’ Front. We do not turn whichever way as the political winds blow. We are not toys that bow to the narrow party political shenanigans of either the ruling African National Congress (ANC) or the opposition Democratic Alliance DA). Both these parties advance neo-liberal policies that hollow…

By Geoff Embling, Ward Four DA councillor In the November 2021 Municipal Election, Ward 4 had 5274 registered voters, the highest number per ward in Makana, doubling the number of registered voters in some wards. 2383 Ward 4 residents voted on election day, a 45.18% turnout, meaning that 54.82%, or 2891 voters, did not turn up to vote. Ward 8 had 3033 registered voters, of which 1186 voted on election day, a lacklustre 39.10% turnout. 60.90%, or 1847 voters from Ward 8, did not bother to vote. Considering that the quota of votes for a proportional representative seat on the…
