Kingswood College first XV ended off its season in spectacular fashion on Saturday with a convincing win over Graeme College on Graeme’s Somerset Field.

Kingswood dominated the early exchanges with their forwards excelling in the scrum and mauls to open up a commanding 17-0 lead playing into the wind. Graeme responded with a try before half time to enter the break at 17-7.

The second half commenced with Graeme converting a penalty to reduce the gap to 17-10. However, Kingswood made full use of the wind advantage, combined with the world class kicking performance from Praise Matsila, who kicked 7 from 7 with the team scoring two tries and a collective 20 unanswered points leading 37-10 heading into the final closing minutes.

The forward pressure from Kingswood was relentless, however Graeme managed a conciliatory score at the death to finish the game at 37-17. Kingswood, for the second consecutive season, have been the most consistent first team in the Eastern Cape with a fitting final performance to validate this accolade.

It was also a brilliant ending to what has been a fantastic season for the Kingswood 2nd XV rugby team, having lost only one game this whole season. On Sunday, the boys managed to pull off a 22-0 win against Graeme College.

“Well done to all the players and coaches for the hard work that has been put in this year. 2025 looks promising for Kingswood rugby as we build on a successful 2024 season, many of these young lads will move up to the 1st team next year. A fantastic statistic to also note is that over 70% of our players in the open division got an opportunity to represent the 1st team, training under our professional coaching team, a huge advantage of being in a small school,” read a statement from Kingswood.
