Makana Local Municipality would like to express its disappointment and also condemn, in the strongest terms, the actions of the people who damaged the road that has recently been completed in Ncame Street, the municipality said in a statement this week.
According to the statement, angry employees who were employed by one of the local SMMEs started to remove paving blocks and burn tyres in front of the Department of Social Department in Joza, complaining of non-payment.
“The municipality understands their frustration, but damaging property that benefits the community is not the answer.”
The municipality says although the payment issue is between the service provider and its employees, it had to intervene and protect public property.
Councillors of Makana Local Municipaity had to quickly rush to the scene and intervene in order for the employees to stop what they were doing, said the statement.
A meeting between the municipality, the SAPS and the affected employees took place to resolve the issues they were raising.
An agreement was reached and the employees agreed to fix the damage, which they subsequently did (as seen on photo).
“It is discouraging to see people damage property that is meant to service the people of Makana and we would like to appeal to the public to refrain from this unbecoming behaviour. Damaging public property is a crime and the municipality will take the necessary action to ensure that anyone implicated in damaging public property is dealt with accordingly,” the municipality asserted.
