Makhanda’s non-profit organisation Food4Futures recently hosted its highly anticipated fundraiser at the 1820 Settler’s Monument’s Fountain Foyer.
The event came alive with the sounds of music and the spirit of community, featuring stellar performances from the Makhanda Kwantu Choir, Kingswood Music School, Rhodes Jazz Band, and the Access Music Project and drawing a lively crowd eager to support a worthy cause.
Food4Futures is a Makhanda-based NPO with a primary focus on hunger alleviation, although they address other areas of need as well. The organisation supplies food parcels to families who are unable to adequately feed themselves. They distribute grocery parcels every second week from their premises at 33 New Street. Each parcel costs approximately R120 to make up. According to their website, distribution is strictly controlled and all recipients are vetted as far as their need is concerned and are registered in a database of information.
“We distribute parcels to 160 recipients, impacting the lives of approximately 800 men, women and children,” reads a statement on Food4Futures website.
The event, on 30 May 2024, kicked off with a heartfelt welcome speech by Mary Birt, the founder of Food4Futures. “I am very proud of my staff and the people who support our organization because without them, I am nothing,” she expressed, setting the tone for an evening filled with gratitude and solidarity.
Attendees were treated to an eclectic mix of musical performances. The Makhanda Kwantu Choir mesmerized the audience with their powerful harmonies, while the Kingswood Music School showcased the talents of young, aspiring musicians. The Rhodes Jazz Band brought a vibrant energy to the stage, and the Access Music Project captivated all with their innovative compositions.
To ensure everyone was comfortable and well-catered, the Red Cafe Makhanda/Grahamstown provided a selection of warm meals and beverages, keeping the crowd fed and hydrated throughout the evening. A cash bar was also available, with all proceeds going directly to Food4Futures to support their ongoing efforts to assist those in need within the community.
Birt later reiterated her appreciation for the unwavering support from the community. “Tonight has been a testament to what we can achieve together. Your support means everything to us,” she said, her words resonating deeply with the audience. She concluded with an optimistic outlook for the future, stating, “This event was a success, and every year it grows. I hope next year will see it grow even more.”
In addition to ticket sales, attendees were encouraged to make donations and purchase Parking4Parcels tickets, further contributing to the fundraising efforts. The event successfully raised substantial funds, which will be instrumental in aiding Food4Futures’ mission to combat hunger and support vulnerable individuals and families in Makhanda.
The night was not just about raising funds but also about celebrating the spirit of community and the power of collective effort. Food4Futures extended its heartfelt thanks to all performers, attendees, and supporters who made the event a resounding success.
