Positivism as a way of thinking – a historical exploration
Presented by Friends of the Grahamstown Public Libraries
Positivism is the name given to a particular set of beliefs or doctrines about the nature of reality, the nature of knowledge, and the relationship between people and their social and physical environment. The development of the notion and how, until recently, central ideas inherent in positivism have permeated both the sciences and the humanities and came to dominate Western and international thinking. In this context, they will be contrasted with alternative conceptions of reality, sometimes collectively referred to as ‘non-positivism’ or ‘anti-positivism’.”
