Older Persons Week is celebrated annually in South Africa to honour and pay tribute to older persons and raise awareness on issues that affect and impact them.

On 28 September 2023, the Older Persons Forum in Makhanda hosted a build-up programme to the week at the Nompumelelo Creche in Joza, which was filled with different stakeholders including the Department of Social Development, the Health Department, SASSA, Home Affairs and SAPS.

The programme’s primary objectives were to maintain and promote older persons’ status, well-being, safety and security and protect their rights.

The theme for the day was “Combat the abuse of older persons.” Those who attended the programme were allowed to speak out about the daily abuse they face, such as verbal abuse and poor treatment at the clinics. Officials from the various departments advised them about steps to take when such abuse occurs.

Sister Khanyisa Xotyeni from the Department of Health educated the guests about Dementia, mainly affecting older persons. “It mainly affects older people, but not all people will get it as they age; things that increase the risk of developing Dementia include age more common in those 65 or older, smoking and drinking too much alcohol,” said Xotyeni.

Councilor Zodwa Cetu, chairperson of the Women’s Caucus, said, “We have identified that…the unemployment rate is high so we encourage people to start small businesses that can bring income…Vuka uzenzele. We are encouraging women so that you can go to the Municipality and request the help you need,” Said Cetu.

After the information session, the audience members felt well-informed. Nomsa Ngebezana, one of the participants, said, “I am glad that there is a programme organised for us and having these officials to answer our questions,” adding that she would like to apply for grants such as the Foster Care grant for a child neglected by their parent.
