Fashion and accessory lovers recently gathered at the Village Green for Fashion Day, hosted by the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC). Local and provincial delegates from DSRAC and the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) showed support to the talented designers who displayed their fashion items.

BNS Clothing Director, Zikhona Make, indicated the clothing items on show from across the province that are financially supported by DSRAC. “The department has supported clothing line industries across the province, in which today we can actually show the output of their contribution,” said Make.

She also thanked the DSRAC and ECDC for their contribution to showcasing her products which she hopes brings further employment opportunities and advance her career.

Make added that the clothing line designs are a fusion of the traditional and the modern world, “Our clothing line represents our beautiful Xhosa heritage and culture while blending it with a touch of modern elements to feel good not only in traditional events but also in a normal day,” said Make.

ECDC Senior Manager, Phakamisa George, indicated that the organisation plans to expand its footprint beyond the National Arts Festival while promoting young creatives. “This is a great time for the Eastern Cape as we have increased our partners for this year’s festival, which allows a platform for youth producers to showcase their talent not only here in the Village Green but also in Makhanda,” said George.

He added that they want to involve Makhanda’s youth, especially in this year’s festival activities. “We have selected nine local documentaries to be showcased in township venues, as we aim to engage with not only the local filmmakers but also with stakeholders in the area,” said George. The ECDC’s film expo takes place between 26 and 30 June at the Monument, where international and national filmmakers and stakeholders will present and provide guidance.
