The Albany Horticultural and Lilium Society is asking people to diarise their 2016 flower show which will take place on October 8.

The AHLS committee says they will be highlighting the amazing work of Grahamstown gardeners in producing flowers, plants and herbs despite drought and water shortages.

In order to be ready for the show, spring bulbs should be on your shopping list, the organisers say.

Vegetables like broad beans, peas and lettuce will do well in the cooler weather. Sunnyside, one of their sponsors, stocks a range of vegetable seedlings that will be suitable for the Herbs and vegetable section.

Feeding is important over these winter months so that those rose blooms are bigger than ever.

Their pot plant section is always popular and for those with extra-large pots, there is no need to repot – a photograph will do justice to your potted arum or variegated plant.

For the children’s section, there will be a surprise in store.

The venue will be the Oatlands Primary School.
