Sophia Young Stars soccer academy held a soccer tournament as the club celebrates its fifth anniversary this year.

This is the second of the club’s celebrations, with more events to follow throughout the year.

The weekend’s tournament saw U13s and U15s taking part.

The host club went on to win both the U13 and U15 finals, showing they are the in-form teams this year.

The two sides also won the Easter tournament, organised by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Art and Culture.

All matches took place at the sports field in Extension 7, next to Ntsika Secondary School, on Saturday and Sunday 28 and 29 May.

After the group matches on Saturday, hosts Sophia Young Stars made it through to both finals, as did City Pirates U13 and U15 teams.
In the U13 final, Sophia Young Stars won 1-0. And in similar fashion, Sophia U15s went on to beat City Pirates by the same score, 1-0.

The club was formed by Lindisipho Swartbooi in 2011 with the purpose of providing recreation to youth from the Joza township.

Sophia Young Stars are not only a football club who prides themselves in footballing excellence, they also work hard to make sure their players perform well academically.

Since 2014, they have held a weekly extra tuition project with students from Rhodes University coming to Ntsika Secondary school (where the club is based) and assisting the players with Maths and English.
