Blasting is scheduled to take place at the Shaw Park quarry on the R72 between Port Alfred and Fish River on Tuesday 26 April 2016 at 3pm, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has warned.
In a media statement, Sanral said the road would be closed for approximately 30 minutes.
The Shaw Park quarry is situated next to the R72, near the intersection of the R72 with the gravel road leading to Shaw Park.
The quarry extends from the Sanral kilometre markers 20 800 to 21 200.
“Motorists are asked to plan their trips accordingly and to use caution when making use of the road,” said Mbulelo Peterson, Sanral Southern Region’s Regional Manager.
"Sanral apologises for any inconvenience caused."
Sanral said construction of major culverts on the R72 between Port Alfred and Fish River has started and deep excavations are taking place close to the road.
They said large equipment would be used during the construction and as a result, the contractor would be implementing a restricted two-way traffic flow from the 4km road marker that is 1.4km from the outskirts of Port Alfred in an easterly direction (towards East London).
“There will be no shoulder or auxiliary lanes in this section and a speed limit of 40km an hour will be implemented within this section,” said Peterson.
The restricted two-way traffic will be in operation until the construction of these structures has been completed.
“Motorists are requested to obey the speed limit at all times and to use the road with caution,” he said.
