The top four soccer clubs in Grahamstown were in action over the past weekend in the second round of the South African Football Association (SAFA) SAB Regional League.

For the first time, this season (which started in November 2015) sees Grahamstown with four clubs represented in the Sarah Baartman section of the regional league.

All the local sides played in front of their home crowds at JD Dlepu Stadium on Saturday. The first game of the day saw local side Eleven Attackers going down 1-2 to United Eleven from Bathurst. City Pirates were up next, and they managed to draw 1-1 to former ABC Motsepe side Cacadu United from Alexandria.

The final match of the day was a derby game between Makana Rhini United (Maru) and Makana Pillars, who were promoted into the regional league at the end of the 2014/2015 season.

With more experience playing in the regional league, Maru went on to win 2-1. The SAFA SAB Regional League comprises 832 clubs and over 20 000 registered players, making it the largest senior league administered by SAFA.

Two regional winners (from each of the nine provinces) will be promoted annually to the SAFA ABC Motsepe League after a series of play-offs in their respective provinces.

All four teams are in action again this weekend, with Maru involved in another derby encounter when they face City Pirates at JD Dlepu Stadium.

Eleven Attackers travel to Port Alfred to play Young Romans, while Makana Pillars travel to Bathurst to face United Eleven. All matches start at 3pm.
