Highway Patrol members Constable Lungile Mbadu and Sergeant Sipho Gwente were on patrol around 7.30am when they noticed a white Toyota Corolla on West street opposite the Makana Resort, near the N2, Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said.
The front left rim of the vehicle was resting on bricks and a check quickly established that it was a vehicle that had been stolen in Queenstown, so the officers approached the vehicle.
They found two men inside who said their car had broken down and the driver had gone to look for help.
“A few minutes later the driver approached on foot and, on noticing the police members, he started to flee,” Govender said. “Constable Mbadu gave chase and managed to successfully apprehend the suspect, while Sergeant Gwente placed the other two under arrest with the backup of the local SAPS members.”
When they searched the vehicle, a loaded .38 special revolver with five rounds of live ammunition and an empty cartridge, were found hidden under the gear lever. The serial number was filed off.
The three men, in their late 20s, are in custody and will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court.
They face charges of possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle, as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
